FAQ

Paper rolls & receipts

Which roll size do I need for my till, payment terminal, scale or POS printer?

The right roll size depends on your device. Check the manual of your till, payment terminal or scale, or measure your current roll. You need three measurements: the width, the roll diameter and the core diameter.

Send us the model of your device and we will find the right size for your till rolls, paper rolls for payment terminals or scale rolls.

What do paper roll sizes such as 57x40x12 or 80x80x12 mean?

Sizes such as 57x40x12 or 80x80x12 give the dimensions of a paper roll in millimetres, in this order: width x roll diameter x core diameter. A 57x40x12 roll is therefore 57 mm wide, has a roll diameter of 40 mm and a 12 mm core. An 80x80x12 roll is 80 mm wide, has a roll diameter of 80 mm and a 12 mm core.

Because of differences in paper weight and paper thickness, the actual roll diameter can differ from the diameter in the roll name. So always check the maximum roll diameter your device can take. Compare the roll length too: rolls with the same size designation do not necessarily contain the same amount of paper.

Not sure which size suits your device? Get in touch and we will help you further.

BPA-free or phenol-free thermal paper: what is the difference?

The difference lies in the colour developer in the thermal coating of the paper. In BPA-free paper, bisphenol A is not used as a colour developer; another developer, such as bisphenol S (BPS), may still be present. In phenol-free thermal paper, no phenol-based colour developers are used, so no BPA or BPS either.

From mid-July 2027 it will be compulsory to supply phenol-free throughout Europe. That applies to both paper rolls and labels.

Can BMLE print paper rolls with my logo or text?

Printing paper rolls with your logo or text is certainly possible. We personalise your paper rolls with your logo, a message or a promotion, and we can also number or perforate them. That way every receipt becomes a calling card for your business. Request a quote for custom printed paper rolls.

How do I calculate the length of a paper roll?

You can easily calculate the length of a paper roll with the calculator on our website. You enter the roll diameter, the core diameter and the paper thickness, and the calculator works out how many metres of paper are on the roll. Would you rather we calculated it for you? Get in touch.

How do I store thermal paper and how long does a receipt stay legible?

Store thermal paper cool, dry and out of direct sunlight, preferably in its original packaging. How legible a print stays depends on the paper quality, the print quality and the storage conditions. For certain paper qualities the expected legibility can be 5 to 25 years, provided you follow the prescribed storage conditions. Heat, moisture and light can make the print fade faster. Ask us about the specifications of your paper quality. For important receipts you want to keep for a long time, also make a digital copy.

Labels

Can the labels be fitted with an RFID chip?

Yes, we can propose a label solution with an RFID chip. The right version depends on the dimensions, the application and the equipment you work with. Tell us which data you want to record and which printers, RFID readers and software you use. We will then look at the technical options and make a suitable proposal.

Direct thermal or thermal transfer: which labels do I need?

The choice depends on your printer, the application and how long the print has to stay legible. Direct thermal labels need no ribbon: the printer prints straight onto heat-sensitive material. They are often used for applications with a limited lifespan, such as shipping labels and tickets, where exposure to heat and light stays limited.

With thermal transfer, the print is applied to the label using a thermal transfer ribbon. With the right combination of label material and ribbon, the print can be more resistant to wear and environmental influences. Tell us how and where you use the label and we will advise you on the right printing technology.

Which adhesive do I need for my labels: permanent, removable, high tack or deep-freeze?

The right adhesive depends on the surface, how long the label stays on and the conditions. Permanent adhesive is intended for lasting adhesion. Removable adhesive makes it possible to take a label off again later; the result depends on the surface and how long the label has been in place. High tack adhesive gives strong initial adhesion and can be suitable for more difficult surfaces. For chilled or deep-freeze labels we look at both the temperature at the moment of application and the temperature during use.

Tell us what you use the labels for and we will advise you on the right adhesive.

Which core diameter, roll direction and winding direction should I choose for my labels?

That depends on your printer or applicator. Common core inner diameters are 19, 25, 40 and 76 mm. State whether the labels should be wound inwards or outwards and which edge of the label should come out of the printer or applicator first. Also state the maximum roll diameter your device can take.

Not sure? Send us a photo of your current label roll or the model of your printer and we will help you further.

Will BMLE labels fit my printer or applicator? What do I need to measure?

Give us the width and height of the label, the total web width including the backing paper, the core inner diameter and the maximum roll diameter. Also state the device model, the printing technology and the roll specification, for example the gap between the labels or a black mark for the sensor. That way we can check that the roll fits and can be processed correctly. Looking for a new device? Take a look at our range of printers and accessories.

Paper or plastic labels (PP/PE): when do I choose which?

Paper labels are often a cost-effective choice for dry conditions and applications that do not require high resistance to tearing or moisture. Plastic labels, such as PP and PE, are generally more resistant to moisture and tearing. For outdoor use or contact with cleaning agents we assess the label as a whole: material, adhesive, printing and any protective coating.

Would you like to weigh up the environmental impact? Take a look at our environmentally friendly labels and the Clean C range. We will help you choose a material that suits your application and packaging.

Does BMLE have labels for food, chilled and frozen products?

BMLE supplies labels for food packaging, chilled and frozen products. Tell us the packaging, the surface and both the temperature at the moment of labelling and the storage temperature. Also state whether direct contact with food is possible. We will select the right combination of material and adhesive and look at which product declarations your application requires.

What is the best way to store labels and thermal labels?

Store labels in their original packaging, at a stable temperature of 18 to 25 °C and a relative humidity of 45 to 55 %, out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources. Use the oldest stock first. For standard labels, 12 months is a general guideline when stored correctly; the product specification may indicate a different storage life. Direct thermal labels are particularly sensitive to heat and light. The shelf life of unused rolls is not the same as the legibility of a print.

Read our guidelines for storing labels.

Which label dimensions do I need to give BMLE?

Give us the label width x label height in millimetres, together with the core inner diameter, the maximum roll diameter and the number of labels per roll you need. State whether the labels should be wound inwards or outwards and which edge should come off the roll first. Also send us your printer or applicator model and the gap between the labels or sensor mark you need. A photo or a sample of your current roll helps us determine the specification.

With that information we can draw up an accurate tailored quote and be certain the labels will fit your printer.

Linerless

Can linerless rolls be fitted with an RFID chip?

For certain linerless solutions, every label can be fitted with an RFID chip. This requires the label size, the positioning of the chip and antenna, and processing on your equipment to be matched to one another, among other things. Send us your application, the data you want and your printers, RFID readers and software, and we will look at which version is possible.

What are linerless labels and when should I choose them?

Linerless labels are self-adhesive labels without backing paper, also known as a carrier or liner. So there is no backing paper left to throw away after peeling. That means more usable label material can fit on a roll and fewer roll changes are needed. On systems with a cutter you can adjust the label length to the information you print.

Linerless can be worth considering if you process a lot of labels, want to avoid backing paper waste or need different label lengths. Applications include shipping labels, order labels, price tags and scale labels. The right choice depends on your printer, the surface and the adhesion required. Discover linerless at BMLE.

Which printers are suitable for linerless labels?

You need a printer that is suitable for the linerless material chosen. The paper feed and the parts that come into contact with the adhesive have to be designed for it. Depending on the system, the labels are cut to length or torn off. An ordinary label printer is not automatically suitable for linerless.

Not sure whether your current printer is suitable? Send us the model of your printer and we will check compatibility. Looking for a new device? Then take a look at our range of printers and accessories.

Which sizes, rolls and core diameters are possible for linerless labels?

Linerless is available in various roll widths, roll lengths and roll diameters. Common core inner diameters are 12, 19, 25, 40 and 76 mm, but the right specification depends on your printer and the material chosen. On printers with a cutter you determine the label length while printing. Send us your printer model, the roll width you need, the core size, the maximum roll diameter and the application through LabelRequest.

Which adhesive types are available for linerless labels?

Depending on the material, permanent, removable and repositionable versions are possible. Permanent adhesive is intended for lasting adhesion; removable adhesive allows the label to be taken off later. Repositionable adhesive makes it possible to move the label and apply it again. Terms such as hotmelt describe the adhesive technology, not automatically the adhesive properties or the suitability for food contact.

Tell us what you use the labels for and we will advise you on the right adhesive.

What are the advantages of linerless labels?

Linerless avoids backing paper waste. At a comparable roll diameter, a roll can hold more usable label material, so you have to change rolls less often. How large the saving is depends on the material, the roll build-up and the label length. With variable label lengths you can also match the amount of material to the information you print. Take a look at our environmentally friendly labels too.

What should I watch out for when using linerless labels?

Use a printer and material that are matched to each other. Follow the printer manufacturer's maintenance instructions for the paper feed, print head and any cutter. Store the rolls in line with the product specifications and use the oldest stock first. Test new material in your own working environment before you deploy it on a large scale.

You will find more maintenance tips on our page about cleaning printers and print heads.

Can I have linerless labels printed (with variable data)?

Having linerless labels printed is certainly possible. We print them with colours and your logo, and you can print variable data on them yourself, such as barcodes, prices or shipping details. That way you combine a recognisable brand identity with the efficiency of linerless. Request a quote for printed linerless labels.

What is the best way to store linerless labels?

Store linerless rolls in their original packaging, at a stable temperature of 18 to 25 °C and a relative humidity of 45 to 55 %, out of direct sunlight. Avoid pressure on the rolls and use the oldest stock first. The storage life depends on the material and the adhesive, so follow the product specification. Let rolls acclimatise before use in the room where you are going to process them.

Read our guidelines for storing linerless rolls.

How do I request samples of linerless labels and how do I test them?

Request samples at info@bmle.be. State your printer model, the roll size you need, your application and the surface the label has to stick to. Test the printing, the feed, the cutting or tearing and the adhesion on your own equipment. Also assess how the label behaves during its intended use.

What information does BMLE need for a quote for linerless labels?

State your printer model, the application, the surface and the conditions of use. Also give us the roll width, the label length you need or its range, the core inner diameter, the maximum roll diameter and your expected consumption. Let us know what adhesion you need and whether you want pre-printing with colours or a logo. Request your quote through LabelRequest.

MAXStick

What is MAXStick and what do you use it for?

MAXStick is self-adhesive thermal label paper on a roll, without backing paper (linerless). The labels are repositionable: you can apply them, remove them and stick them down again easily. With a suitable printer you print each label at the length you need, matched to the information you want to show.

You use MAXStick to identify orders, products and packaging clearly. In hospitality and food service that means order labels on takeaway bags, meal packaging and drinks cups, for example. In shops and warehouses, MAXStick supports stock management, shelf labelling and the picking and packing of orders. There are applications in care and libraries too, such as identifying meal trays or marking reserved books.

In this way MAXStick helps keep information in the right place and organise day-to-day work more clearly, without backing paper waste.

Discover everything about MAXStick at BMLE.

What is the difference between MAXStick and conventional labels?

MAXStick is thermal self-adhesive label paper without backing paper. With a suitable printer you print labels at the length you need. The repositionable adhesive allows the labels to be removed and applied again. Conventional labels sit on backing paper and often have a predetermined size. Which solution suits you best depends on your application, printer and the adhesion you need.

What is the difference between MAXStick and linerless labels?

MAXStick is itself a linerless solution. What sets it apart is the combination of a patented silicone-free coating and repositionable adhesive, with different adhesive patterns and tack levels. Many other linerless materials use a silicone layer to let the roll unwind. Which version is suitable depends on the printer and the application; the coating alone does not determine how well a label adheres.

Which surfaces and applications is MAXStick used on?

MAXStick is used on takeaway bags, meal packaging, drinks cups and other packaging, among other things. Adhesion depends on the version chosen and on the surface, for example the type of cardboard or plastic, any coating, moisture or contamination. Would you like to use MAXStick on your packaging? Request a sample and test the adhesion and repositionability in your own conditions.

Is MAXStick repositionable or permanent?

MAXStick has been developed for repositionable applications: you can remove the label and apply it again. There are versions with different adhesive patterns and tack levels. How well the label stays stuck and can be reapplied also depends on the surface and the conditions of use. Tell us what adhesion you need and we will advise you on the right version.

What sustainability advantages does MAXStick have and which product declarations are available?

MAXStick has no backing paper, which removes that waste stream. With a suitable printer you can match the label length to the information you want to print. MAXStick uses a silicone-free coating. Would you like to include a claim about compostability or a certificate, for example, in your own communications? Ask us for the current product declaration for the version chosen and the conditions that go with it. Take a look at our environmentally friendly labels too.

Is MAXStick suitable for cold, damp or harsh environments?

Whether MAXStick is suitable for a cold, damp or harsh environment depends on the version chosen. Tell us the surface, the temperature at the moment of application and the temperature during use. Also state whether condensation, moisture or contamination is present. We will look at the product specifications and recommend a practical test. A version for room temperature is not automatically suitable for chilled or frozen use.

Which formats and rolls are available for MAXStick?

MAXStick is available in various roll widths, roll lengths, roll diameters and core sizes. With a suitable printer you can determine the label length for each print. The version available depends on your printer and the MAXStick material chosen. Send us the roll size you need and your printer model through LabelRequest and we will propose a suitable version.

What information does BMLE need for a quote for MAXStick linerless?

For a quote for MAXStick linerless we need the following details: your printer type, your application, the label size (width x length), the core diameter, the adhesive type you want and your estimated volumes. With that information we will propose a linerless solution that suits your printer and your working process. Use LabelRequest to request a quote.

Can MAXStick be printed with barcodes and variable data?

With a suitable direct thermal printer you can print variable data on MAXStick, such as barcodes, order details and delivery addresses. Pre-printing with colours or a logo is also possible, depending on the version. State your printer model, the printing you want and the application with your request. Request a quote.

Which printers and applicators are suitable for MAXStick?

Use a printer that has been tested or approved for the MAXStick material chosen. A printer that can process linerless is not automatically suitable for every MAXStick version. Take a look at our list of compatible MAXStick printers and send us the exact model, the roll size and your application. With an applicator too, we check compatibility per combination.

Looking for a new device? Then take a look at our range of printers and accessories.

How do I request MAXStick samples and how do I test them?

Request samples at info@bmle.be. State your printer model, the roll size you need, the surface and the conditions in which you will use the label. Test both the printing and processing on your printer and the adhesion, removability and repositionability on your own packaging.

File supply & printing

Which file formats does BMLE accept for printing labels?

For printing we prefer to receive a PDF, EPS or AI file. Convert the fonts used to outlines, so that they are retained during processing. Logos and text in vector format give the sharpest result. For images in JPEG or PNG, at least 300 dpi at the final print size is generally needed. We check your file for suitability for the chosen production method.

Not sure whether your file is suitable? Send it to info@bmle.be and we will check it for you.

Which resolution and colours (CMYK or Pantone) should I supply?

For a sharp print in the right colours, supply your files in CMYK or with Pantone colour numbers (PMS). Images need a resolution of at least 300 dpi at actual size, in other words at the size at which they appear on the label. An image with a lower resolution can look blurred or grainy on your label.

For brand colours, give us the Pantone number. We will look at how that colour can best be approached with the chosen material and printing technique. A rendering on screen is no guarantee of the final printed colour.

Can BMLE help with the design or layout of my labels?

We are happy to help with the layout of your labels. We put your logo and text at the right size and make small adjustments, so that your file is ready to print. Need a completely new design? We will gladly refer you to one of our partners.

Get in touch to discuss the options.

How does proofing and approval work at BMLE?

You first receive a digital proof. Check the text, the dimensions, the positioning and the colour references given on it. Once you approve it, we start production. The colours on your screen may differ from the printed result; discuss any specific colour requirements with us beforehand.

What if I do not have a print-ready file?

No print-ready file? Not a problem. Send us your logo and your text at customerservice@bmle.be and we will create a layout for your labels, tickets or paper rolls. You will receive a digital proof for approval before we start printing.

Sustainability, certificates & compliance

Does BMLE have a certified quality system?

BMLE does not yet have a certified quality system. We have taken the first steps towards setting up a food safety management system in line with the requirements of FSSC 22000-4. Our aim is to have this system operational in the second half of 2027.

With this process we want to further strengthen our procedures for hygiene, traceability and the control of food safety risks, among other things. In this way we are working step by step towards a demonstrably controlled way of working for our customers in the food sector.

The options include labels from the Clean C range, FSC-certified materials and BPA-free or phenol-free thermal paper. With linerless and MAXStick you avoid backing paper waste. Properties such as plastic-free or compostable and the declarations that go with them are assessed per product version.

Discover all of BMLE's environmentally friendly labels.

What does FSC Chain of Custody (CoC) mean and what does it guarantee?

FSC Chain of Custody is a certification system for tracking and administratively verifying FSC materials and FSC claims through the production chain. Certified companies have to meet the FSC requirements and are independently audited. The claim indicates which type of material is involved: FSC 100%, FSC Mix or FSC Recycled. Alongside material from FSC-certified forests, FSC Mix may also contain recycled material and controlled wood.

BMLE is registered under certificate code SCS-COC-005219-UD and licence code FSC-C008551. State with your request that you want FSC-certified material. For products sold as FSC, the applicable FSC claim is stated on the accompanying sales documents.
